Small Things!
Sometimes it is the small things
So it is important that the small things I notice
I cannot help but notice the behaviors that bring
Certain awful traits of human existence into focus
Gum chewed and the wrapper on the ground
Finished water and the bottle next to the wrapper
I have solemnly and with fury found
The actions of a murderer, a killer, a community fracturer
You leave your shopping cart in a parking space?
Or stop traffic for a text message
I bet you molest children and hate every race
The whole of society should attack your visage
The small things matter too
These actions aren't small or insignificant
They are markers true
For a greater degradation's imprint
Sometimes it is the small things
So it is important that the small things I notice
I cannot help but notice manners that bring
Certain selfish habits of the ego into focus
The speed limit is 25 MPH in a school zone; 10 miles faster
Drives a pathetic person of inhuman disregard,
A ruinous heartless despicable bastard
Even worse than they are those who speed in cars
On residential streets where kids and pets play
Or those who let doors swing and hit knees
They must abuse animals, or the elderly, or proudly say
That their only reason for being alive is to please
Their own sensations, their own impulses no matter how wrought
With their despised past that must make them taunters
Awful disgusting repulsive and banality fraught
Simpletons, monsters!
Some small things are unforgivable
Like sitting on the stairs in the subway station during rush hour
Nodding your head obstructing tired people mainly me from making my train
I have to hop over your selfish should be exiled from society because you are hindering the cogs in this society from getting home on time, you are limiting their happiness you are stressing the commute you are like the people not intelligent enough to move to the center of the car they crowd the door so it is easier for them to get out but all of us are getting off at Union Station, the last stop. We aren't smart enough to live next to each other, we can't even master the small things so why should we be trusted with such grand responsibility? Some people can't even buy a bag of chips, eat that bag of chips, and ensure that empty bag of chips makes it into a trash can, and we entrust people like this with grandiose societal change. Sitting there... sitting there... if he is thrown in front of the train I think most people would agree to that offense. Further chastisement for the car that drives on the shoulder to pass all of the rest of us stuck in this most agonizing part of existence, traffic now stuck at the Broadway exit rear-ended blocking the far right lane now all of traffic has to be diverted around this dead guy who thought that his time was more important or because he forgot to wake up on time or he didn't wake up on time because he was drunk the night before or broke up with his boyfriend or climbed a tree and saved a cat and thought that it was a small thing.
Is this causality? No, it isn't. It is doing the very least you can do to ensure that society is better for all of us, not better for you and only you. I understand that thought process is not what is ideal but what is propagated. And all the small things are typically ignored, they are diminished. I figured out that society should be molded to what I want and need and what is best for me and my family and that should be the betterment of society. But what you want and need and strive for and depend upon and react to with no foresight or afterthought is absent-minded or just a glitch in your inherent normality. There is no saving anyone, there is never going to be some grand realization that wrong is wrong.
