Vanity, Sustained Sorrow, and Forgotten

Vanity
Mirrors on all the walls and ceilings
On the floor and on all the entrances
So before I exit and before I am seen
From the top of my head to the soles of my feet
Every imperfection whether guided by popular notions
Cultural standards or my own anxiety
Is prodded and examined and analyzed
And scanned and screened and inspected
Then fixed and corrected and amended
Reformed, touched up, and bettered
Then reexamined and again analyzed
Re-scanned and re-screened and re-amended
Until I reach a hopeless standard
Garnered by a vain approval of whatever beauty is that day
I wish I was see-through

Sustained Sorrow
Feelings wane and therefore relationships from the start
Were never meant to sustain as they begun when finished
Because moods and circumstances inevitably change
As do just about all matters of a fragile heart
And when those feelings wither and diminish
You are left shocked and disgruntled and lame

Paralyzed by what you knew would come
Because change is imminent and that's unchanged
Not ignorant, nonetheless cheerless and gruff
You thought your persistence would dumb
And retard what was impending and famed
To your denial and absurd notion cuffed

Yesterday was today and will always be tomorrow
Despite your will and resistance
Soon will shift your sustaining sorrow
Despite its persistence

Forgotten
You are the reason
You are the reason you are forgotten
When life handed you opportunity
When life handed you opportunity you took it
And willfully, dare I say, gleefully you took it
You are the reason you are forgotten
No more will I complicate a life
Whose puzzle of a million pieces I wanted to place
To fit together as they should be
Envisioning a larger picture so glorious
That words deny its worth
In remembering what was
I am the reason I was forgotten

Don't make me forget you
By my side is where I want you to be
And if our love is what I know it is
I know you'll be there
Because you are right here beside me

Despite wavering moods and emotions

How we feel about each other
