It Rained Last Night
It rained last night
As I left my apartment this morning
The ground was wet and cars had grown moss
And mold and the hard rain had chipped the paint of all the cars
A stray dog was drinking from a puddle
While a tsunami of birds circled
Waiting for their chance to take a drink
Of the paint and oil soiled reason for life
It rained last night
The people I passed all had umbrellas and rain coats
Anticipating a rain that had already passed
Like all of the cars splashing puddles onto the sidewalk
An old man and his grocery bags were buried
He raised his cane like a rifle with no ammunition
Shooting his stare like a fully automatic at the car
Already three blocks away
It rained last night
The air feels fresher than it usually does
You can breathe easier and deeper
And you won't cough up your lungs or puke your stomach
The dew drops on the desert flowers are mirrors
That the hummingbirds and butterflies and beetles
Use to deny their ignorant vanity
Because they know that they will die if they take a peek or a drink
It is raining
Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap! cease-less tapping
On my window and roof as I try to dream
Tap! Tap! Tap! Laying in my bed thinking of tap-dancers and their annoying shoes
And hideous monster rain drops drowning my heart
Thinking of a flood of birds staring at me then drinking my flesh like a smoothie
It is raining Tap! Tap! Tap!
I cover my head to keep from getting wet, the water is at my waist
As I left my apartment this morning
The ground was wet and cars had grown moss
And mold and the hard rain had chipped the paint of all the cars
A stray dog was drinking from a puddle
